DESCRIPTION OF AN OBJECT
The University of Kansas campus is rich with unique spaces and storied traditions. At every turn, you’ll find one-of-a-kind sculptures and art pieces all with a story to tell. One must-see stop is the iconic Forrest “Phog” Allen Statue welcoming you to the hallowed basketball arena, Allen Fieldhouse. The statue itself pays tribute to the Father of Basketball Coaching.
According to the DeBruce Center website, Dr. Allen began coaching while still a student and continued on to a 40-year career as a coach at the University of Kansas. He retired as the winningest coach in college basketball. Fun fact: He was known for his booming foghorn voice and that’s how he earned the nickname.
My first campus tour was at 10 months old! This iconic sculpture has always been a part of my life. I’ve been visiting it since before I even had a memory! It represents the mecca that is Allen Fieldhouse. It’s a tribute to a man who was more than just a coach. It represents not just 125 years of college basketball, but 125 years of great college basketball.
The statue is made of bronze and is almost 9 feet tall. You’ll find it in the Spencer Museum Guide to Campus sculptures. It’s a popular photo spot on game days as fans crowd in to take pictures and selfies. Oftentimes, you’ll see excited fans climb the base and pose for photos right next to the legendary coach. With the new addition of the DeBruce Center, visitors can learn even more about Phog Allen and it only grows his legend.
I’d put the Forrest “Phog” Allen on my top five attractions on the University of Kansas campus. I never tire of visiting this great sculpture. If you’re a true fan, you’ll want to make sure you visit during the day and at night when it’s lit up. Beware the Phog!
